The Family Law department of Kerwoods handled my divorce in 2012 and quoted me £800 + VAT in their Client Care letter. I eventually paid £3,500 + VAT and had no response to my query as to the massive discrepancy between the estimate and the final bill. Given that the divorce was amical and there were no children involved, it is difficult to see why, in the absence of a satisfactory explanation, the original quotation could not have been more accurate. Far worse, however, the solicitor who represented me was a partner in the firm but either knew so little about divorce proceedings that he wasn’t even aware that he should advise me on issues such as inheritance and pension entitlement, or simply couldn’t be bothered to do so. In any event, I received no advice on any of the above issues, with fairly catastrophic financial consequences for me. I subsequently brought a successful action for professional negligence against Kerwoods and they paid me £12,500 in damages. However, that is a very small percentage of what I should have been entitled to in the divorce proceedings, and I cannot recommend more strongly that if you are seeking legal representation in family matters, you instruct a different firm.
