I used Widdows & Pilling several years ago, after seeing these reviews I felt I must give a review. I dealt with Mr Parker who I found to be a very experienced sensible Solicitor who gave me great advise, returned my calls and emails promptly I couldn't fault the service I received. I would definitely recommend Widdows & Pilling

I cannot rate the service I have recently received from Widdows Pilling LLP high enough. Jeremy Parker gave me straight forward, honest advice from the start. He returned all phone calls and emails promptly and I had every confidence in the advice given. Costs were reasonable and I have no complaints with the service received. I would recommend the firm to anyone.

Donald and Ged whom I have had dealings with at this law practice are in my opinion both professional and personable and have always conducted a thorough investigation into any of my property purchases. I would have no hesitation in recommending this law practice and have indeed done so to many of my contacts.

I instructed this company to undertake conveyancing on a BTL property. They under paid SDLT to HMRC, but took the correct amount from me. They spotted this error 12 months later and did not inform me. I received an interest tax demand from HMRC which when confronted with they said they knew nothing about. Only after months of further investigation with ourselves and HMRC did they finally admit the error.

I would not recommend this company based on this experience.

I have used these solicitors twice within one year (2018/2019), both times being represented by Ged McNamara when buying/selling properties. On both occasions Ged offered honest advice and acted professionally throughout. The second time I used Widdows Pilling (selling a house) was a particularly complex matter and I can't thank Ged enough for the help he provided. Would definitely recommend (& have done!).

I am Widdows Pilling`s complaints officer. I have reviewed our data base and checked with the fee earners in our property law department and can find no record of us acting for anyone with this name. I have not received any complaints that would fit the facts complained of by Mr Hewitt . I am therefore drawn to the conclusion that this is a malicious complaint filed with the intention of damaging our reputation. If I am wrong and Mr Hewitt is a genuine client who is disappointed at the service he received I ask that he contact me. All complaints are investigated fully and where possible remedied .

Absolutely appallingly bad service. Avoid Widdows Pilling at all costs.

Widdows Pilling were guilty of gross incompetence and negligence when dealing with a house that we wished to purchase.

It was only 3 days before completion that they realised that the Title Deeds to the house did not actually exist. The first step in any conveyancing is for the seller's solicitor to ensure that the seller has the legal right to sell the property. The second step is for the buyer's solicitor (in this case Widdows Pilling) to assure themselves that the first step has been completed. Without this simple process anyone could sell any house to someone else, whether they owned it or not.

As it transpired there should be 2 sets of deeds for the house we wished to buy. One for the house and one for a separate section of garden. Widdows Pilling failed to realise this, having only got the deeds for the garden. They proceeded on that basis, having not checked with us what we thought we were buying.

We were only saved, from paying in excess of £335,000 and buying only a small section of garden, by our useless solicitor going off sick. (Widdows Pilling have since, illegally, shared with us intimate details of that solicitors illness & reasons for being absent from work!)

Another solicitor took over the case and he did spot the fairly obvious, glaring problem that he didn't have any deeds to sell to us.

They now claim that they have not been grossly incompetent or negligent as they spotted the problem before completion. 3 days before completion, rather than 3 months before!

Their next move was to sack us, rather than to apologise and to try to put their own errors right. Their attitude since has been dismissive and defensive, as if they have done no wrong at all.

I am Widdows Pilling`s complaints officer. I am aware of this complaint and have investigated it . I concluded that the allegation that we were negligent was simply not correct. The suggestion that we have acted illegally in relation to our staff is not only wrong it is offensive. If you chose to instruct us you will find that you are dealing with real people who take responsibility for their actions. If there is ever cause for complaint ( real people do make mistakes ) again an individual takes responsibility for investigating and resolving the issue.

      07/09/18 - Response by Michael D

Mr Parker did indeed "investigate" our complaint. To no-one's surprise he found that the firm that he works for did no wrong.

He then demanded that we sign a cover-all form to allow him to disclose our confidential information in order to respond to this complaint. Why he wished to do this we still don't know. Nor did he say what confidential information he would have to make public. He has been able to respond to the complaint without our signing away all of our information.

Solicitors do have, due to their privileged position, a wealth of information on clients. They surely can't just ask you to sign away all of that client confidentiality. Widdows Pilling felt able to do this though!

I stand by the fair comment that Widdows Pilling were negligent and incompetent. Not to realise that the deeds to this house didn't actually exist is fairly negligent and incompetent in my view. How else do they determine that the seller has the legal right to sell a house? Because he says that he has the right? Seriously?

They "resolved the issue" by sacking us! That's not really taking responsibility for their mistakes, is it?

Mr. Jeremy Parker was recommended to me by a friend who's a judge, and he acted for me quite successfully during acrimonious divorce proceedings and again two years later to discharge the maintenance. I have found Mr Parker a straightforward solicitor, honest in his advice and approach, and reliable. From his large experience I have noted that he has a very good sense of where the balance lies in court. His charges are modest and often did not charge for some of his services bare the minimum cost. Unlike some solicitors who charge for one item thrice (a phonemail, followed by email and an attached letter all saying the same thing) Mr. Parker had an honest and non-ambiguous approach to charges. He is a decent man and a decent, experienced, and reliable solicitor.

I was always dealt with in a professional, speedy manner. Telephone calls and emails were responded to immediately from either Jeremy or his secretary, (As did I). Face to face appointments were kept to a minimum and always on time. From the outset and throughout my case, I was advised of the costs I would incur and kept up to date with regular correspondence. A positive experience with a positive, successful outcome. Very pleased.

He legally supported me through my Divorce and recently represented me on a Child/ Family Law case. His diligence has always impressed me and his advice has always been constructive and professional. Jeremy was always very clear about charges and I found his rates competitive. On many occasion I have contacted him and have not been charged; in one case on a Saturday. I would definitely recommend Jeremy if you want appropriate and helpful representation.

I have not acted for a Mrs Rayner . It is correct that we do charge for initial advice, there is a fixed fee of £100 including VAT which is then deducted from our bill if we are instructed. The reason we charge is that we have to open a file for everyone we see and that involves an administrative charge for which we are obliged to charge. Our charges are I believe much lower than other solicitors offering a similar service . I have no objection to honest criticism ( like everyone I do not enjoy it ) but I do object where criticism is filed on line by people I have not advised. I have never in a career spanning 35 years pressed a client to initiate divorce. As a firm we have a very robust client care policy and any client who is in anyway unhappy with our service has open access to an effective complaints policy.
