Jimmy Savile Scandal Grows

(Posted on 14/10/12)

According to Scotland Yard, the allegations of sexual abuse against Sir Jimmy Savile go back at least six decades and now, those who were the victims of this sexual predator are reliving their pain. But they're also coming to together to define an unlikely group, one that includes a common thread of pain, victimization and ultimately healing.

Many victims advocacy groups, including the National Association for People Abused in Childhood, say they're fielding higher than usual calls. "If there is anything beneficial from this, it's that it's allowing victims and survivors of abuse to come forward and speak out," said Peter Saunders NAPAC's CEO. He also said that perceptions of sexual abuse are changing, too. Child abuse is absolutely devastating and when it's of a sexual nature, it opens up a lifetime of psychological problems.

The growing number of victims who are coming forward highlight the seriousness and rampancy of these kinds of crimes. It's also highlighting another problem - the lack of resources available to victim advocacy programs.

NAPAC reports that as of this past Friday, it's only been able to respond about 400 of the 1,500 calls it's received. Of those the almost 100 have been referred to law enforcement. Further complicating matters is the involvement of the Department of Health, which has its own investigation underway. It announced this past week that it would be forming a task force for the Savile scandal. At least one solicitor in the UK has been approached to review some of these sexual crimes now being levied.

The collective investigation is in its infancy, but there sure thing is that the entire scope of the situation has yet to surface. There are bound to be more allegations, more solicitors brought into the investigation and a deeper shame to attached to Jimmy Savile.
