Setting up a Power of Attorney for my 90-something parents took just short of ONE YEAR (two acquaintances, who used other solicitors, report that this same process took them 4 and 6 weeks respectively). It was surreal. A complete and utter shambles. A catalogue of inefficiencies, lame excuses, and - in my opinion - downright lies, with two solicitors and a legal executive all covering each other's backs. As the clients, my parents were nervous about "changing horses midstream", so I finally turned to the Legal Ombudsman's office, and suddenly things started to move. One of the solicitors, together with his legal executive, came to my parents' home, where in my presence and that of an independent witness the matter was discussed. At one stage, when I pressed him for a clear and frank answer as to WHY this had taken so long, the solicitor, who had sat there, sullenly refusing to meet my eye, exploded in rage. I was glad to have the independent witness with me. We still had to wait another two months before the thing was done and dusted. They then had the brass nerve to submit a disgracefully large bill. Being the clients, and also of a generation that is a bit afraid of what they see as "authority", my parents paid it. Obscene. I am awarding one star, simply because the system will not permit me to award a big, fat ZERO.
