We put an offer on our new house at the start of May.
We contacted Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law to handle the purchase.

Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law sent us the initial document pack at the end of May but they had misspelled my name. We called them and Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law advised that they would send us a revised pack.

After 10 days, Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law emailed and then called us, asking why we hadn't sent the documents back.
We advised Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law of what we were told by one of their people and were then told that they would not be sending revised documents.

Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law advised that we were to correct the documents we have, fill them out and return them.
We did so and delivered them personally by midday to the Seaham branch.

We had also emailed and provided all the requested documents, as well as ID to be scanned and forwarded to the lender.
      This was on 7.6.2024.

Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law proceeded to dodge calls and inquiries by other parties, prompting us to have to call Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law and ask them to return calls and queries.

As we had heard nothing by 2.7.2024, we called Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law to ask what the holdup was and if they needed anything else from us to progress.

Paralegal in charge of conveyancing proceeded to outright LIE to us and fob us off with "These things take time."

We called the lender, who informed us that Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law have forwarded incorrect ID for my wife and have not informed us of this.

It turned out that the receptionist at Seaham branch of Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law must have dropped my wife's ID documents (or decided to scan something else) and then sent incorrect information to the paralegal in charge of conveyancing.

We went back to the Seaham branch of Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law and instructed reception (the same woman) what needs to be scanned.
My lovely wife was very kind and tried to give her an out and a way to save face.
The receptionist proceeded to be quite rude to her; she didn't acknowledge in any way that she made a mistake, she just said it wasn't her fault and tried to gaslight us into thinking that my wife had made the mistake.

After the reception at Seaham branch of Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law scanned the correct information and sent the paralegal the email, we had to practically sit on the paralegal for another four hours, until she forwarded the email to the lender.

The purchase of our new house is supposed to be in its final stages now and the realestate agency believes it will go through any day now.

I requested an update from Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law and got two responses.
One was an automatic response from paralegal's inbox, stating that she would be away until 29.8.2024.
The other one was a rather short email by a member of Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law, stating that the searches were projected to come back at 29.8.2024 and paralegal would review at that time.

Given the performance of Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law so far, I have serious reservations about the veracity of the last email.

Due to the delays, the property owner is asking what's taking so long, we've got contractors dropping out and we're stuck in limbo.
Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law have taken something that was joyous and exciting, if a bit frightening, and made it into a living nightmare.

Using Mortons solicitors / Mortons Law was a big mistake.
They have caused at least a month's delay, they have lied to us, refused to communicate with us and dodged calls from other parties.
This is not the behavior I would expect from an organisation that I'm paying to represent my interests.

Mortons were an absolute nightmare, they gave me inaccurate information at the time of purchase that had vastly expensive repercussions. The solicitor responsible went on Garden leave and subsequently left the company however Mortons at all stages attempted to deny responsibility for numerous mistakes they made. They forgot to pay the stamp duty and I got a bill from HMRC, they wrongly submitted papers to the land registry such that the registration was rejected and I only got the vital papers relating to my house sale in June 2020 after a 2018 purchase. They even managed to send all the papers to the old address that I had in 2018, it didn’t dawn on them that I bought the house to live in, despite it being obvious. I raised a complaint and the solicitor responsible for complaint handling simply attacked me, lied, invented his own false interpretation of things that didn’t happen, he refused to face facts of even read or understand the case. They were cheap however as far as I am concerned utterly unprofessional.
I have never encountered such a poor firm totally lacking any accountability, responsibility and not a care in the world for their customers who are clearly an inconvenience to them. I am now pursuing a case through the Ombudsman as I feel it important that they accept responsibility for their shortcomings.

If there were an option of zero star, I will choose that.
Note this is not my first time to use conveyancing service. The conveyancing service I received from Morton is bad, in fact the worst. The whole process took 6 months without justification. After instruction, they rarely contacted me, and everytime I called, it sounded as if they want to avoid the phone call if they can. You wait and wait and wait and wait, and they give you everything in one go at the very end and tell you like 'this is all yours, tell me if you have any problem'.
The charge was competitive, but only 20 or 30 pounds less compared to many other solicitors. I will definitely recommend to AVOID.
