Solicitor without a soul:
This week I attended the funeral of my cousin Jill in Milford Haven. I was the only mourner. She lived alone and had lost touch with family and friends after moving back to Wales many years ago. She had appointed local solicitor Hains & Lewis as Executors of her will, leaving her estate to charity and requesting, I was told, an unfussy funeral service. She had few if any other living relatives, but was a kind and generous person who would have touched the lives of all who knew her. I was concerned they would have an opportunity to pay their respects, but had no way to trace friends or neighbours. The solicitor, with access to her papers, repeatedly refused to engage with me in an effort to identify them before the funeral. The most it would do was publish a notice in the local newspaper. So I was alone in being able to say goodbye. On the day of the funeral I received a letter insisting the firm had met all its legal obligations as Executors. Perhaps this is so. But what happened to respect and moral responsibility? By contrast, staff at the local funeral director Tom Newings & Son, were kind and thoughtful in making the arrangements.
